Open Signal’s 2nd annual music video make-a-thon will be hosted on Saturday June 18th, and will honor Juneteenth celebrations by making music videos for Black Portland-based musicians. Spots are limited to 24 Open Signal Members and the registration deadline is May 23rd. Filmmakers will work together to come up with concepts, storyboard, shooting, and editing all within the 6 hour time limit and Open Signal will host a screening that night to view the music videos. Portland animation studio HouseSpecial announces the opening screening of their latest short film Lamentation at The Hollywood Theatre @PDX, the new movie theatre in Portland’s airport (C Concourse), beginning on February 23, 2017 and running regularly through the Spring.
The short film is inspired by Portland’s own world-renowned Pink Martini’s rendition of the sorrowful Romanian ballad Până când nu te iubeam (Before I Fell in Love with You), with vocals by Storm Large. Director Kirk Kelley, Founding Partner/Creative Director of HouseSpecial, employed traditional stop-motion animation, in-camera VFX and CG elements combined with high-speed footage captured in practical environments. Local Director Matt Jay’s recent music video for Jennie Wayne is currently featured as WKE feature of the week. The video “My Own Home” is a beautifully photographed one-shot music video that magnifies the artifacts and textures that make a space your home. Local director/cinematographer Johnny Le shot the video .
I spoke to both Matt and Johnny today to get more info on how the video came about. Matt has managed to make his way around the local music scene directing videos for a few other artists as well as directing a few short films.
