KOIN Talks to Jacy Mairs about SXSW & “Trash Baby”

“Trash Baby” marks a few firsts. It’s the directorial debut of an Oregon filmmaker and it’s the acting debut for a Portland high schooler.

Now, the film is set for its world premiere at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

“’Trash Baby’ is very loosely inspired by my own childhood, and it has a lot of reoccurring themes that I think happened for everyone at that age around forcefully wanting to be older than you are, and then kind of the reality of what that actually looks like when you start embracing some of the adult themes that come into play,” director Jacy Mairs told KOIN 6 News. Tag! Queer Shorts Festival 2025

This year’s theme is “Create, Gather, Resist,” which is a direct call for LGBTQIA+ filmmakers and allies to respond to the dire political climate by engaging in visual storytelling that counters the dehumanizing narratives, to join together in celebration and solidarity, and to organize against the transphobia, homophobia, ableism, racism, and sexism that characterize this administration.

The locally produced feature film “Trash Baby” will make its world premiere at the SXSW film festival in Austin, TX later this year. Written and directed by Jacy Mairs ​​​​​​”Trash Baby” is an indie drama that celebrates the kids who grew up amidst white trash culture in the early 2000’s. McMinnville Short Film Fest Opens February 27th

Held annually in the heart of Oregon’s Wine County, McMinnville, the internationally recognized MSFF, focuses on a range of narrative topics, including Native American, Drama, LGBTQ, Comedy, Horror, Experimental, Animation and Documentary films.

Solar Punk Film Festival Open for Submissions

Solar Punk Film Festival (SPFF) is a new festival in Portland, OR hosted by Bridge City Media with a screening in June 2025.

SPFF invites filmmakers, visionaries, and changemakers to share short films embody the Solar Punk philosophy: a hopeful, solution-driven outlook on environmental and societal futures. This festival is an opportunity for artists to imagine worlds where innovation, community, and sustainability thrive, fostering spaces for inspiration, dialogue, and transformation.

The Contest

  • Submissions Open: January 17 – May 16, 2025
  • Film Length: 2 to 15 minutes
  • Formats Accepted: mp4 or mov
  • Eligibility: Submissions should adhere to Solar Punk themes.

BendFilm Announces Winner of BIPOC Woman Filmmaker Grant

Filmmaker Rosanna Peng Awarded Grant for Her narrative short film “Bowling Bao”.

BendFilm, Inc announced the winner of its annual $10,000 BIPOC Woman Filmmaker Grant. This annual program created by BendFilm awards a filmmaking grant to a woman of color to promote diversity and inclusion in the film industry. The 2024 winner is director Rosanna Peng for her project ‘Bowling Bao’: a short film that captures the internal struggles of identity, belonging, and self-expression, offering a raw, authentic look at how societal expectations—rooted in class, gender, and culture—can stifle one’s sense of self. The Archaeology Channel International Film Festival Returns in May

Coming May 14th-18th, The Archaeology Channel International Film Festival is a juried international competition in the cultural heritage film genre, bringing you the world’s best films relating to the human past and our shared cultural heritage. These are great films for the whole family!

The Keynote Speaker, Dr. Eske Willerslev, will kick off the event at the Festival Banquet, on May 14, 2025, 6-9pm, at the Gordon Hotel in Eugene. This is followed by four days of juried films and videos on archaeological and indigenous topics, screened in the Sheffer Recital Hall at The Shedd Institute in Eugene.
