KOIN Talks to Jacy Mairs about SXSW & “Trash Baby”

“Trash Baby” marks a few firsts. It’s the directorial debut of an Oregon filmmaker and it’s the acting debut for a Portland high schooler.

Now, the film is set for its world premiere at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

“’Trash Baby’ is very loosely inspired by my own childhood, and it has a lot of reoccurring themes that I think happened for everyone at that age around forcefully wanting to be older than you are, and then kind of the reality of what that actually looks like when you start embracing some of the adult themes that come into play,” director Jacy Mairs told KOIN 6 News. Celebrate 50th Anniversary of #OregonMade “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”

Screening on March 20, 2025 at 730p at the Hollywood Theatre.

Come celebrate the 50th anniversary of the all-time-classic #OregonMade film ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST. Winner of 5 Oscars and shot at the Oregon State Hospital with a full cast field trip to nearby Depoe Bay, the film version of Ken Kesey’s novel will be shown on a 35mm print. The screening will be a benefit for the Museum of Mental Health now housed in the State Hospital in Salem. The locally produced feature film “Trash Baby” will make its world premiere at the SXSW film festival in Austin, TX later this year. Written and directed by Jacy Mairs ”Trash Baby” is an indie drama that celebrates the kids who grew up amidst white trash culture in the early 2000’s. Bold, cinematic, and rooted in authenticity, this film is a love letter to the beauty of one of America’s most dismissed communities, and an honest look at those society openly calls trash. #OregonMade “My Dead Friend Zoe” to be Released on February 28

Inspired by a true story, MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE (SXSW 2024 Audience Award, Woodstock Grand Jury Prize) is a dark comedy drama about a complicated friendship and a divided family. Merit, an Afghanistan veteran who’s engaged in a mysterious relationship with Zoe, her wise-cracking (dead) best friend from the Army, is summoned to the family’s ancestral lake house to care for her ailing Vietnam vet grandfather and, thanks to a persistent VA counselor and an unexpected love interest, is forced to confront her past once and for all. Happy New Year everyone. As we often do, we’d like to give you some highlights from the past year as well as a small dose of “Looking Forward.”

For those of you who don’t know, Oregon Film, sometimes called the Oregon Film & Video Office (OFVO) other times called the Governor’s Office of Film & Television, is the oldest US state film commission that we know of. #OregonMade “Out Come the Wolves” Announces Cast

Up-and-comers Orlando Norman and Spence Moore II along with Heidi Grace Engerman and Cassady McClincy Zhang are starring in “Out Come the Wolves,” an indie drama which is marking the directorial debut of producer Danny Peykoff.

Sam Rechner, West Mulholland and Curran Walters are also cast in the feature that began shooting in Portland, Oregon this week. Big Newport Studios, founded by Peykoff, is financing and backing the production, which is also the company’s inaugural project.

“Amplify Portland” Announces Grant Winners

In partnership with Travel Portland the Portland Events and Film Office announced today the three recipients of the 2024 Amplify Portland grant. This grant was created to uplift filmmakers who use local talent, crews and vendors – building opportunities for professional growth and bringing exposure to Portland through unique, diverse storytelling both on screen and behind the scenes.

“Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail” Raised $244,000 For OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital!

Last week an auction of all 31 “Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail” sculptures took place at The Judy and raised a total $244,000 for OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

LAIKA, the Visit Downtown Campaign, Wild in Art, and OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital joined forces to bring Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail to the Rose City last August in celebration of “Coraline’s” 15th anniversary.

#OregonMade “Cellar Door” Out Now

The Portland shot thriller “Cellar Door” is out now in select theaters and on streaming platforms. In this suspenseful thriller, a city-dwelling couple (Jordana Brewster, Scott Speedman) is looking to relocate to the suburbs of Portland, Oregon.
