Next up in our #OregonMade Film Series at The Hollywood Theatre comes a post-apocalyptic film like no other (unless you count WATER WORLD, then, yes, it’s kind of like that). Kevin Costner’s Central Oregon shot THE POSTMAN, winner of both the prestigious Razzie and Yoga Awards, tells the story of an unnamed wanderer who retrieves a postman’s uniform and a bag of mail, and embarks on a quest to deliver the letters within.

This year’s PLAYA Screenwriter’s Residency Award has been granted to two projects and three writers – David Poulshock and his project “Captain Jack” and KatMeow García & Rebeca Alamo González for their project “Dance and Resist.” Each project team will receive an up to two week residency at PLAYA Summer Lake and a $1000 stipend to develop their stories and scripts deep within the inspirational Oregon Outback.
This year’s award was open to Oregon Resident filmmakers, screenwriters and other creative teams to develop and write a narrative project with a “historic” theme that is set in the Northwest while the story itself was to focus on people, cultures, traditions, events or communities that are not traditionally covered or heard from. Crofton Diack, Producer for National Geographic/BBC Studios on their series, “Life Below Zero,” was nominated for Outstanding Unstructured Realty Program.
IFC’s “Documentary Now” gathered up a handful of nominations, such as; Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series (to Portland native, Alex Buono). Yesterday, at the Hammond Marina, Warrenton, the 8th sign on the Historic Oregon Film Trail was unveiled. For film buffs, Oregon is a haven of locations and stories from more than 100 years of filmmaking. Inspired by these nostalgic backdrops, The Historic Oregon Film Trail, launched in Astoria earlier this year was designed to identify iconic set locations around the state. The latest addition to the trail—highlighting the scenic Columbia River views from “Free Willy”— will be in the neighboring town of Warrenton, Oregon. Congratulations to, John Waller’s Uncage The Soul team with their winning pitch – “Teens In Trees” – the Outdoors and Health Film Grant 2019-20 was awarded this week. This new grant, provided by the #OregonMade Creative Foundation, and in conjunction with Travel Oregon, offers $15,000 in funding to make a short film that explores the notion that spending time outdoors can improve health outcomes for us all.
Uncage The Soul’s team, lead by John Waller, in partnership with Expedition Old Growth, and assisted by Friends of Outdoor School, will create a short film that will, “follow three urban adolescents from Portland as they ditch their devices and adventure offline into Cascade old growth forest to spend the night high in a tree canopy. Since 2016, the Hollywood Theatre has partnered with the Oregon State Parks Department to produce a series of screenings in Oregon State Parks. All parks in the series are within an hour’s drive of Portland, with film programming selected to complement the diverse features of each park.
This series encourages Oregonians to explore the amazing recreational amenities our parks have to offer, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, kayaking, camping, picnicking and more. All screenings start at dusk. Free event. No tickets required.
