Day of Empathy 2023 – March 8

On March 8th at 6pm at The Hollywood Theatre, a benefit will be hosted by the YWCA’s Family Preservation Project (FPP) in partnership with Dream.org! All proceeds go to the Family Preservation Project. Celebrating the tenth anniversary of local filmmaker Brian Lindstrom ‘s acclaimed documentary MOTHERING INSIDE, Lindstrom will be joined in discussion by the subjects of the film about life on the outside over the last decade, highlighting reflections on binary thinking, rupture, and repair.

Three additional short films will be screened: Brian Lindstrom’s LIKE A SHIELD and the Portland premiere of his new work WE ARE MORE, both highlighting the unintended consequences of parental incarceration on children, why the Bill of Rights for Children of Incarcerated Parents is needed, and what powerful young people are doing to ensure its existence; and the trailer for A WOMAN ON THE OUTSIDE, a film written by Kiara Jones and co-directed by Zara Katz and Lisa Riordan Seville, bringing to light Kristal’s struggle to keep families connected to incarcerated loved ones.

Lighthouses of Oregon: A History of Aiding Maritime Navigation Doc By Matt Cook

After half a year or so of hard work, I have completed a full documentary about Oregon’s lighthouses. This movie tells the story of each Oregon lighthouse. These lifesaving structures helped Oregon grow in the early days of the state. Today they stand as very photogenic monuments of our history.

I took on this project because of a love for both my home state and outdoor filmmaking. I find the outdoors to be an escape from everyday life, and I try to show that in videos. Continue reading... “Lighthouses of Oregon: A History of Aiding Maritime Navigation Doc By Matt Cook”

When in Doubt – Documentary on our Divides

When in Doubt
A new documentary about the importance of difficult conversations and the benefits of doubt.

The Signal Productions is making a documentary with the aim of helping improve dialogue across ideological divides and strengthening relationships. We are working with one of the authors of How to Have Impossible Conversations, Peter Boghossian, who will be coaching our documentary subjects to improve their ability to communicate. The film will feature amazing people like Daryl Davis, self-described race reconciliator, who was able to get over 200 people to leave behind hateful organizations like the KKK just through dialogue and by befriending them. One thing I might like to do is submit it to any Oregon documentary film festivals. Would love to chat with anyone about the project. Continue reading... “My First Full Length Documentary On Newberry Volcanic Monument”
