Soma Games Staff Bio – Level Designer Brandon Simonds

Soma Games LLC is an indie video game developer located in Newberg, Oregon. We believe video games can be far more than time-wasters. Video games hold the potential to showcase beauty, reward adventure and excellence, and challenge thinking. BRANDON SIMONDS

Brandon is one of our level designers — he self-describes his job as, “to find the fun and be the player’s advocate.” He’s been on our team since August 2017. Below is a brief Q&A:

Question: What does your average workday look like?
My days are all so different, but I love the variety. I could be building levels, creating wireframes, designing prototypes, or any other combinations of things that take place in the design realm.

Question: What’s your favorite part of working for Soma?
The people. I really enjoy working with everyone on the team.

Question: How do you want people to remember you?
Someone that loved and served God, valued family and community, was passionate about the outdoors, and cared about environmental stewardship.

Question: What causes do you care about?
Human sex trafficking. I’ve been on international missions and worked with advocacy groups for many years. It’s a huge, global (and surprisingly local) problem that isn’t going away anytime soon.

Question: What’s your personal motto? Or, what three words best describe you?
Embrace the suck. It’s how you respond when things get difficult.

Question: What’s a goal you have for this year?
My goal is to climb the Torment-Forbidden traverse. It’s a mile-long traverse on a knife-edge ridge between two classic summits in Washington state.
