#OregonMade “Deafula” Celebrates 50 Years with Screening

Katherine Wilson & Gary Holstrom

The #OregonMade film “Deafula”will screen at the Hollywood Theatre on October 4th and 5th at the Hollywood Theatre. “Deafula” is the first ASL feature film ever made and 2025 is its 50th anniversary.

The 50th anniversary of the first feature film performed completely in American Sign Language. “Deafula” was shot in Portland – including scenes at the Pittock Mansion – and tells the timeworn story of a man coming to realize he may, in fact, be a vampire.

Presented in partnership with the Oregon Historical Society. On Saturday 10/4, there will be a Q&A with producer Gary Holstrom, moderated by OHS Moving Images Archivist Matthew Cowan, and will include two ASL interpreters.

At the time of its release, the Oregon Journal called the film “more than a mere curiosity. At its best it is an education for the hearing in a new way of perceiving reality” and the LA Times noted that “Deafula is an admirable achievement which speaks with sad laughter.”

  1. Sorry I can’t make it- but would love to have a credit on your poster of the photo of me with Gary… I did many jobs besides act: hair, make-up, wigs, costumes from Helen’s, carried cable, work continuity.
