Southern Oregon’s Joma Films Releases Fifth Feature

Ashland based Joma Films recently sent this update about its latest feature “Above the Trees” and its new distribution platform. After leading the way with a new and innovative way to reach their audiences during the pandemic with the wonderful “Phoenix, Oregon,” Joma’s ability to reinvent how it brings their films to audiences continues to be at the forefront of the industry.

It’s been a long time coming – really five years in the making since the release of “Phoenix, Oregon” – and there have been many stops and starts along the way.

But today, we are excited to announce both – the digital release of “Above the Trees.”

Pre-order now to watch starting August 29.

Our fifth feature, “Above the Trees,” was born during the pandemic and went before cameras with a loose, flexible schedule – filming forty days over eight months. This was a creative reaction to True Crime. All those cold cases, false confessions and miscarriages of justice are frustrating and perplexing. It’s such a tantalizing, entertaining genre, but ultimately disheartening, because you can never erase decades of suffering.

What feels most interesting about True Crime are the humans involved, and the little absurdities that impact verdicts. Sometimes a case simply comes down to dumb luck, incompetence or lies – or maybe someone on the fringe paying closer attention? Putting the pieces of this fictional puzzle together was so satisfying, because we could control the final outcome.

French philosopher and Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin once said that we’re not human beings having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings having a human experience. It makes us think fondly of our characters in Above the Trees, and how fate, chance and coincidence often feel interchangeable and loom largely in our lives.
