The Oregon-made feature film, The Discoverers, starring Oscar and Emmy nominee Griffin Dunne will have its Pacific Northwest premiere at the Regal Fox Tower in Portland on June 20. Writer/director Justin Schwarz will attend the 7pm show for a Q&A with his Portland-based crew. The film will expand to Salem, Eugene, Sisters, Ashland and more cities throughout the summer. The Discoverers won several awards on the festival circuit and opened in New York and LA to fantastic reviews and sold-out shows. A New York Times Critics’ Pick, Vanity Fair dubbed the film “smart, canny, and sweet… full of grace notes and small surprises,” The Village Voice praised the “gorgeous” Oregon landscapes, and the NY Post declared, “Griffin Dunne shines… in Justin Schwarz’s impressive feature debut.”
The Discoverers is a bittersweet comedy about a family forced on a Lewis and Clark historical reenactment trek who discover themselves and each other as they make their own passage across America.
The film stars Oscar and Emmy nominee Griffin Dunne (After Hours), Madeleine Martin (Californication), Emmy-nominee Cara Buono (Mad Men), Emmy-winner Stuart Margolin (Rockford Files), NBR-winner Ann Dowd (Compliance), Devon Graye (Dexter), Dreama Walker (Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23), David Rasche (In the Loop), Becky Ann Baker (Girls), Scott Adsit (30 Rock), and John C. McGinley (Scrubs).
The Discoverers showcased the Oregon coastal region, shooting in Oswald State Park, Short Sands Beach, and the towns of Seaside and Manzanita. The Oregon crew was headed by veteran Portland-based producer Neil Kopp (Wendy and Lucy), and included cinematographer Chris Blauvelt (Meeks Cut Off), locations manager Robert Faires (Wild) and many of Kelly Reichardt’s Portland-based, Night Moves team.
