THE OUTSIDERS
DIRECTOR: FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA
US, 1983

THE OUTSIDERS opens with the words of Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell): “When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.” His mother and father killed in a car accident, the dreamy Ponyboy lives with his brothers Darry (Patrick Swayze) and Sodapop (Rob Lowe) in a tumbledown house on the wrong side of town. All three belong to the Greasers, underage hoods at war with middle-class kids known as Socs (pronounced SO-shes). The cast sports a who’s who of allegedly adolescent actors who significantly upped their Q-ratings in subsequent years, including Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, and Emilio Estevez, as well as the over-the-hill teen heartthrob Leif Garrett and the ageless Tom Waits. (91 mins.)
