Welcome to Unity

“Welcome to Unity,” has won both Children’s Jury Prize and Adult Jury Prize for Documentary Feature Film at the 2014 Chicago International Children’s Film Festival.

“Welcome to Unity,” a 90-minute documentary directed by Katharine Mahalic, is a light-hearted, comedic film that shows how crazy things get when seven foreign exchange students, including two from Muslim backgrounds, are brought into a Christian home in the tiny town of Unity, Oregon—population 100. It’s a story literally filmed by a group of exchange students as they sink their teeth into rural Oregon, becoming the stars of the high school football team, and simultaneously learning to live the “American Way.” Continue reading... ““Welcome to Unity” Best Documentary Feature”

Intertwine Revisited: One on One with Dylan Wayne Lawrence

On May 5, 2013, I got a chance to sit down with the creator behind Intertwine, Dylan Wayne Lawrence, in response to an article I had written earlier with Eastern Oregon University Alumni, Lindsay Freeland, about the T.V. pilot, Intertwine. The following are excerpts from that conversation:

Chuck:  So what’s new with you?  What’s all exciting and new with Dylan Wayne Lawrence?

Dylan:  Well, it’s mostly Intertwine (laughs).  Although I did get cast in a film project shooting in Utah called, “Give Me Children.” Continue reading... “Intertwine Revisited: One on One with Dylan Wayne Lawrence”

Phrenic: A Futuristic Thriller for Mobile

Phrenic, my futuristic thriller made in Portland, premiered in the App Store this week. Not in a theater. Not on YouTube. In the same App Store where you go to download Temple Run or Angry Birds.

I began thinking about creating a story for mobile devices last year when I realized I was watching fewer feature films but binge-viewing full seasons of compelling TV shows. What if I could make a miniature version of this experience? Smaller in terms of budget and scale, but also shorter episodes that could be watched on the bus or–let’s face it–in the bathroom.
