AN EVENING OF SHORT
FILM GEMS
Tonight we welcome School of Film screenwriting instructor Roger Margolis to introduce some of his favorite short films. The program includes: visionary Canadian animator Chris Landreth’s RYAN (2004, 13 mins.), the deeply empathetic story of animator Ryan Larkin’s life and accomplishments in images guaranteed to stun and amaze; Daniel Leflin’s DELUSIONS OF MODERN PRIMITIVISM (1984, 16 mins.), in which a young man seeks meaning and identity through the “newest” and most radical form of body modification; Denis Vilenueve’s NEXT FLOOR (2008, 11 mins.), in which, with just two spoken words, the director mounts a gorgeously black comic statement on the excesses of the ruling elite, abuse of planetary resources, destruction of the environment, and collapse of civilization; and Weijun Chen’s PLEASE VOTE FOR ME (2007, 57 mins.), which offers an unexpectedly intimate glimpse into the world’s most closed society as the Chinese government allows its first ever public school election. (120 mins.) School of Film instructor Roger Margolis will introduce the screening.
