Mygration: Outside the Frame’s annual gala screening, featuring stories of migration by Latinx and homeless youth.

November 4, 2019

Outside the Frame's annual Gala showcases a stunning collection of shorts by and about invisible communities in plain sight. Outside the Frame trains homeless and marginalized youth to be the directors of their own films and lives.

The main program will be a series of Telenovella style shorts by Queer Latinx youth, from a young Honduran trans woman who walked to Oregon to houseless folks forced to migrate in their own hometown.

The project was developed in collaboration with Oregon State University and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to combat social isolation and stigma in the Latinx community and features Edna Vasquez’ “Sola Soy” as the theme song.

Mygration also includes “Doomed to Repeat,” an award winning short about art, activism, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, “We’re Still Here,” inspired by the true story of a Native girl who went missing and “Nobody’s Trash,” a film Outside the Frame created for Metro Regional Government as the centerpiece of a storytelling project about how our community “sanitizes” the houseless. “I don’t like being called homeless, because Portland is my home,” says Junior, who lives under a bridge in the Springwater Corridor.

“I’m humbled and proud that Outside the Frame was named 2018’s Best New Nonprofit by the Portland Monthly “Light a Fire” Awards,” says Nili Yosha, Founder and Executive Director of Outside the Frame.

“On any given night in Multnomah County, at least 300 unaccompanied young people are likely to experience homelessness. Outside the Frame provides these youth with job training, a creative outlet, and a sense of dignity and possibility. Program graduates also continue to mentor the next generation of youth, lead service organizations in our community and work as artists.”

“There are rare moments in life when things come our way precisely when we need them. For me, this was Outside the Frame. Before finding this program I was homeless, directionless, depressed, and running low on hope. When I found Outside the Frame, I finally felt like I had something creative to put my energy into. They put a camera in my hands, and taught me how to use it. We created a series of short films, which later screened at Portland’s Armory Theater. We sold out the venue that night. Hundreds of people wrapped around the block just to hear my story, and stories like mine. This was a life-changing experience.” Joey Whiting, Outside the Frame alum and Homeless Youth Outreach worker at Homeplate Youth.
