Aimée & Jaguar (Aimée & Jaguar)

May 9, 2018

In our Monthly Film Series, we will show a variety of GERMAN or GERMAN language films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. On the 2nd Wednesday of each month, audiences will now have a chance to see these films on a regular basis at the CLINTON STREET THEATER. (Children movies will be playing on Sunday afternoons – please check our website.) All films are with English subtitles.

WED. May 9, 2018 – 7:00 PM

Germany 1999, 125 min

Directed by Max Färberböck

Cast: Maria Schrader, Juliane Köhler

In 1943, while the Allies are bombing Berlin and the Gestapo is purging the capital of Jews, a dangerous love affair blossoms between two women. One of them, Lilly Wust (NOWHERE IN AFRICA’s Juliane Köhler), married and the mother of four sons, enjoys the privileges of her stature as an exemplar of Nazi motherhood. For her, this affair will be the most decisive experience of her life. For the other woman, Felice Schragenheim (Maria Schrader), a Jewess and member of the underground, their love fuels her with the hope that she will survive.

A half-century later, Lilly Wust told her incredible story to writer Erica Fischer, and the book, AIMÉE & JAGUAR, first published in 1994 immediately became a bestseller and has since been translated into eleven languages. Max Färberböck’s debut film, based on Fischer’s book, is the true story of this extraordinary relationship. The film was nominated for a 1999 Golden Globe Award and was Germany’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Both actresses received Silver Bears at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival for their portrayals of “Aimée” and “Jaguar”.

AIMÉE & JAGUAR was shot over a period of 56 days at the Everest Studios in Cologne-Godorf, and on location in North Rhine Westphalia, Berlin and Wroclaw. Editing and visual post-production took place in Hamburg, sound mixing in Munich.

The film was funded by the Filmboard Berlin Brandenburg, the Filmstiftung of North Rhine Westphalia, the FilmFernsehFonds of Bavaria, the FilmFörderung of Hamburg and the Film funding department of the German Ministry of the Interior.

Portland Premiere of The Cage Fighter

May 10, 2018

A screening presented by NW Filmcenter and NW Documentary.  NW Documentary is honoring Oregon Doc Camp alumni, Jeff Unay, and will be presenting his Portland premiere of his IFC distributed film, The Cage Fighter.  Please join NW Documentary and Oregon Doc Camp for a pre-screening reception at 6pm

Thursday, May 10 @ 7:00pm

In attendance: Jeff Unay

Whitsell Auditorium, Portland Art Museum, 1219 SW Park Avenue, Portland, Oregon

Format: DCP

Joe Carman is a 39-year-old mixed martial arts fighter. He also works in the boiler room of a ferry, and has four daughters, an angry ex-wife, and alcoholic father. To top it all off, his current wife has no idea he has started fighting again. Although this sounds like a complex narrative drama, it is actually a documentary. Filmed over the course of three years, a story unfolds of a man desperate to continue fighting for something he himself cannot even quite explain, despite growing post-concussion syndromes and the very real risk of tearing his family apart. How far will Joe go to prove something to himself?

The Cage Fighter
  • Directed by Jeff Unay
  • Washington, 2017, 81 mins., English

Mothering Every Day is a screening program co-curated by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan and Irene Lusztig featuring work about embodying / performing motherhood, domestic labor, and the quotidian.

May 19, 2018

Mothering Every Day is a screening program co-curated by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan and Irene Lusztig featuring work about embodying / performing motherhood, domestic labor, and the quotidian. The idea for this program was generated by the artists themselves who were frustrated about the challenges of getting work about maternity screened in the film and art world. From poetic gesture to direct address to the everyday labor of the domestic space, the works themselves borrow from documentary, experimental and installation traditions. This program seeks to reframe motherhood as a valuable site of intellectual exploration and artistic production and expand on a decades-long dialogue considering maternity as an essential feminist concern.

Featuring work by Farheen Haq, Irene Lusztig, Jeny Amaya, Sasha Waters Freyer, and Kristy Guevara-Flanagan. Kristy Guevara-Flanagan and Jackie Weissman director of Rock N Roll Mamas in conversation to follow!

Sat May 19 at the
Boathouse Microcinema

Doors open at 7:30, program begins at 8:00
