AN EVENING WITH
DEBORAH STRATMAN
Deborah Stratman is a Chicago-based artist and filmmaker interested in landscapes and systems. Her films, rather than telling stories, pose a series of problems—and through their at times ambiguous nature, allow for a complicated reading of the questions being asked. All, in their own way, address belief. Tonight she will be on hand to introduce a program that includes: THESE BLAZING STARS (2011, 15 mins.), a film about the ice-cored fireballs we know as comets and their historic ties to divination; IT WILL DIE OUT IN THE MIND (2006, 4 mins.) and HOW AMONG THE FROZEN WORDS (2005, 1 min.), which hail from a trilogy of films variously addressing confluences of the metaphysical and the rational; and the program’s anchor, O’ER THE LAND (2009, 52 mins.), a meditation on the milieu of elevated threat addressing national identity, gun culture, wilderness, consumption, patriotism, and the possibility of personal transcendence. (72 mins.) On Monday, February 7, at 7:30 PM, Stratman will talk more about her work in Portland State University’s MFA Lecture Series, 1914 SW Park, Room 198. Lecture admission is free.
