The 14th Annual Filmed by Bike Festival showcases the world’s best bike movies, and the organizers say this year is their best collection of movies to date: 59 films from 55 filmmakers representing 19 different countries will show throughout the festival.

Outdoor adventurers, hikers, skiers, climbers, snowboarders and bike travelers will love the Adventure Night Program (Saturday May 7, 8 p.m.) that features a collection of movies about grand adventures in gorgeously remote regions of the world – all by bicycle. Watch as intrepid travelers battle the elements, pedal through snow, traverse the rugged road and put their bodies and bikes to the test on a quest for life-changing adventures. Where they go, what they see and who they meet just might surprise you.

Now a Global Event
After the Portland festivities wrap up, the Filmed by Bike packages the movies into collections that are screened throughout the world. Organizer Ayleen Crotty says, “We thought it was rather selfish to keep the world’s best bike movies all to ourselves. Cycling is on the rise and we’ve had a wealth of inquiries from other cities asking how they can show the movies. So just this year we decided to package the films into ready-to-play Bike Movie Night collections. I like to think of this as one more tool in the tool kit of cities that want to get their communities more active and on bikes.”
Bike Movie Nights are already planned for Chicago, the Breckenridge Film Fest, in Salt Lake City, Calgary and many other cities around the world.
A Sign of the Times
We’ve seen this throughout history: As soon as a niche interest begins to become celebrated through the arts, architecture and music, the activity becomes more commonly accepted by the mainstream. Artists are the early adopters. Filmed by Bike is no exception. People all over the world are starting to ride bikes – by choice, for fun – in ways that would have seemed absurd just 14 years ago when Filmed by Bike got started.
“We’ve been there every pedal stroke of the way,” says Crotty. “The first year we showed a handful of films – because that’s all that existed – on VHS tape.”
A Huge Celebration
“Filmed by Bike truly puts the festival in film festival,” says Portland filmmaker Mike Vogel of Front Ave. Films.
The festival kicks off with the New Belgium Street Party down the block at Velo Cult Bike Shop + Tavern (1969 N.E. 42nd St., Portland, OR) featuring a beer garden, circus performers, burlesque, the famous Unipiper, a storytelling video booth and much more. Friday, May 6 from 5-9:30pm. The event is free and open to all ages.
