THE GLASS MENAGERIE: THE FILM –It’s a Wrap!

After 5 Months of Filming, Eastern Oregon University’s First Feature-Length Film Now Enters the Editing Stage.

The cast and crew of EOU’s first feature-length film called it a wrap after five months of intensive and involved filming. The Glass Menagerie, a 92-minute movie based on the famous play by Tennessee Williams and adapted into a film by Professor April Curtis, is now ready for the final concentrated effort of computer technology, voice-over work and musical theme music composed by Biology Professor John Rinehart.

The Project, which will have its Grande Opening Night on Thursday May 26 at 7:00 in the McKenzie Theatre and run for the next two nights, began last May when the EOU Theatre Program was making decisions about what plays to offer that next year. One of the ideas presented was an “American Season of Plays”. The Glass Menagerie, one of America’s best-loved and most heart-full plays seemed to be a natural to fit into the season. At that same time, Curtis had begun switching her academic focus from theatre to Media Arts (now called Media Arts and Communication) became interested in combining a theatre project with film, which was housed in Media Arts. Imagine– The Glass Menagerie: The Film!

It took Curtis approximately 3 months over the summer to write and re-write the screenplay, making sure not to edit any of the text of Williams’ words and not to change the order of any of the words in the play. What she came up with promises silent movie footage, 1930’s black and white expressionism, a dream-laden series of vignettes, emotionally charged acting, and even pirates! The story of the film is focused on the character of Tom Wingfield who has returned to his boyhood home after 7 years in the Merchant Marine, where he remembers his life in 1938 with his unstable Southern mother and his disabled sister whose preoccupation with glass animals gives the film its name. Tom is haunted by dreams both humorous and sad and seeks to atone for his abandonment of his family with the selective emotional balm of memory….
