Portland Community College Plans Animation Degree, Backed by Laika

In an exciting development for the Oregon animation community, Portland Community College announced plans to offer an animation degree beginning in 2025, partly funded by a $60,000 donation from Oregon film studio Laika.

Laika announced Tuesday that it will give $30,000 to the PCC Foundation in each of the next two years to help fund three new classes in animation and stop-motion filmmaking, and the new degree in animation and motion graphics.

Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation Camp; Technology August Festival to Be Held at OMSI

Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation, and Technology (PFCAT) announced its 2023 schedule. The event will be taking place at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) from August 3rd – 6th and will include screenings of 119 films including 110 World or Regional Premieres from 22 countries, as well as panel discussions, parties, and presentations.

House Special Presents Puppet & Video to Gov. Brown in Celebration of Oregon’s Animation Industry

 

House Special founding partner Lourri Hammack and animator Chris Ohlgren presented a specially made puppet of Gov. Brown and a short, stop-motion video of the Governor taking a quick trip across Oregon to the Capitol in Salem to Gov. Brown herself as part of the Oregon Film, Television and Interactive Industry Day recognitions as arranged by the OMPA. Lisa Cicala, Executive Director of the OMPA and Rosemary Colliver from NW Portland-based animation studio ShadowMachine were also on-hand to discuss the growth of the industry. OPB Talks With Alex Bulkley From Animation Studio, Shadow Machine, About Their Studio & New Show, “Dallas & Robo”

Listen to Alex Bulkley, co-owner of ShadowMachine, talking with Dave Miller, OPB’s Think Out Loud ,  discussing what the studio has been up to since they moved up to Portland in 2015.

In 2015, the animation production house, ShadowMachine, opened a satellite studio in Portland. Since then, they’ve produced multiple projects. Most recently, they have worked in collaboration with the WWE to create“Dallas and Robo,” a cartoon that was just released on YouTube Red. #OregonMade Animation Apprenticeship Now Open for Applications

Together with award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine, the #OregonMade Creative Foundation has just launched a unique paid apprenticeship program focusing on hands-on, stop-motion animation production work.

ShadowMachine is about to go into production on a stop-motion series and we have worked together to create two, three month, paid apprenticeship positions on the project.
