39th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival

Northwest filmmakers put their hearts on stage this November 9-18 during the Northwest Film Center’s 39th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival.

Feature film highlights include Lynn Shelton’s YOUR SISTER’S SISTER, starring Rosemarie DeWitt, Emily Blunt, and Mark Duplass; James Westby’s RID OF ME starring Katie O’Grady; a special FREE 50th Anniversary screening of POLLUTION IN PARADISE, the 1962 KGW-8 produced film that documents the beginning of the environmental movement in Oregon that became the hallmark of former Governor Tom McCall’s tenure; and closing the Festival is Matt McCormick’s THE GREAT NORTHWEST.

In addition to features, the Festival offers three programs of short films— Shorts I, II, and III. Highlights include DEAR PLUTO directed by renowned Portland animator Joanna Priestley; DEAR PETER, WOODCHIPS I and II from experimental director Orland Nutt; THE WAY WE MELT from Rob Tyler; and BIRD OF FLAMES, a music video made for David Lynch created by filmmaker Chel White.

In addition to numerous screenings, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival also offers opportunities for audiences to interact directly with filmmakers and industry professionals through events such as the Filmmakers’ BarCamp, an un-conference bringing together the regional filmmaking community and workshops with pioneering music video maker and animator Jim Blashfield, experimental filmmaker and film educator Saul Levine, and Emmy Award-winning animation supervisor Brad Schiff, whose credits include CORALINE and FANTASTIC MR. FOX.
Added to the Festival this year is FRESH FILM NORTHWEST, a juried survey  of teen-made films  created by 13- to 19-year-olds living in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. This combination connects the up-and-coming creative community with today’s professional makers and with opportunities for further exploration and growth.
